Long-time Hamilton County resident Anne Sherve-Ose spent parts of thirteen years paddling the Mississippi River from the headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico. She and her two college friends finally finished the river in 2016. She has written a book, Mississippi Misadventures, which details their experiences in that endeavor. She will discuss both the book and the adventure at a book signing on Thursday, January 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Kendall Young Public Library meeting room.  Sherve-Ose was a canoe guide in a former life, and has been a regular visitor to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota for the past fifty years. Paddling the Mississippi was a very different kind of challenge, however.  Come and hear about flying carp, violent storms, sharing the river with huge barge trains, and alligators, all of which spiced up the daily grind of paddling. Sherve-Ose taught music at Northeast Hamilton in Blairsburg, St. Thomas Aquinas in Webster City, and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.  She lives on a farm near Williams and is currently enjoying the luxury of being retired. No registration required.

Join us at Kendall Young Library for a Movie for Adults program on Tuesday, January 16th at 6:00pm in the Library Meeting Room. The movie this month will be Marshall (PG-13). Starring Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown, and James Cromwell. Director Reginald Hudlin's Marshall, is based on an early trial in the career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. It follows the young lawyer (Chadwick Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) charged with sexual assault and attempted murder of his white socialite employer (Kate Hudson). Muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall partners with a courageous young Jewish lawyer, Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad). Together they mount the defense in an environment of racism and Anti-Semitism. The high profile case and the partnership with Friedman served as a template for Marshall's creation of the NAACP legal defense fund. No registration required. No registration required.

Join us at Kendall Young Library for a Noon Book Club. This book club meets Tuesday, January 23rd from Noon-1:00pm. The book being discussed is The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is a heartwarming book about a lonely man who finds true love, happiness, and friendship. The story is about AJ, a disgruntled bookshop owner who doesn't care for anyone, including his customers. AJ gradually brings the love of books into the lives of the people on the island where he lives. He develops into a nicer and more dependable person over the years because of the love of a child. The author sets out to show the joy that books can bring into one's life and the importance of a thriving bookshop and literary culture in a community. Copies of the book are available at the library’s Check-Out desk. New members always welcome! Feel free to bring a sack lunch. No registration required.
